I grew up in Iran listening to my grandmother’s stories of helping women deliver babies. I was fascinated by what I heard and decided at a very young age that I wanted to become a midwife like her. After graduating from high school, I passed the Iranian National Exam for entrance to university with the goal of becoming a midwife and was accepted into a midwifery program in the far north of Iran. However, because the program was so far away, my family disagreed with my decision to attend. At their urging, I went into environmental engineering instead of midwifery.

In 2001, I moved to Canada with my husband and four-month-old son. I applied to midwifery school but was not accepted because I did not have sufficient English skills. Later, I was accepted to nursing school and became a registered nurse in 2011. However, my heart was still with midwifery and I could not let go of my deep desire to become a midwife. I was accepted to the UBC midwifery program in 2012.

In my first year of training at UBC, I volunteered as a doula at BC Women’s Fir Square program (a program for women dealing with addiction in pregnancy). As a midwifery student, I travelled to Uganda and had the privilege of working with Ugandan mothers, which I consider as the highlight of my midwifery training. These experiences reinforced my determination to become a care provider who supports women in their choices and to birth with dignity and respect.

I wholeheartedly believe in the midwifery model of care, as it promotes empowerment for women to make informed, autonomous decisions. I believe that women undergo major transitions as they go through pregnancy and childbirth. It is a profound experience, and my desire is to be part of this experience and help make it wonderful for every woman. Thank you for allowing me to do so. I am so honoured and grateful for the privilege of being involved.

Burnaby Midwifery delivered my child in December 2020. Since this was my first pregnancy, I was anxious and had many questions and concerns. The team was supportive throughout my journey and patiently answered all my questions. This meant a lot to me because everything was new and nerve-wrecking. They were also very prompt in their correspondence (emails, texts and phone calls) during my pregnancy and the postpartum 6 weeks care. My husband and I really appreciated the at-home postpartum visits. I have friends who had their first child around the same time as me and they did not receive the same quality of care from their OBs. I saw mainly Jouanna during my pregnancy and postpartum. She also delivered my child at the hospital. Jouanna is a seasoned midwife with more than 15 years of experience. She is also compassionate and very thorough during our appointments. In the delivery room, she provided me with lots of verbal encouragements, which was very important, because my labour was more than 50 hours. Overall, I highly recommend Burnaby Midwifery. Other notes about their office. It's minutes away from Brentwood SkyTrain station. If you drive, there is plenty of free underground parking for those visiting the office.

Although my birthing time didn't go as planned the midwives made me feel calm and confident throughout as we moved from plan a to plan z! They were so kind and understanding and empathic as they knew how badly I wanted a natural homebirth, but it wasn't in the cards and I ended up with an emergency c section. At no point did I feel nervous or fearful and I'm so grateful they helped me stay calm. I felt so supported with them throughout my pregnancy and the support has continued postpartum as well. And it is so nice that they come to my home for postpartum visits! I would highly recommend these wonderful women to any expecting parents.

If you are looking for an excellent service and care I highly recommend Zahra Jouanna. She is the best. She took care of me and my baby. She was there from the start to give me support and when it was time for me and my baby to meet Jouanna was there very helpful and really waited for me to deliver my baby safe. My labor was 24 hours to be exact. Jouanna was there the whole time. It was just me and my husband and Jouanna but I felt like I had my family around me because Jouanna was always there to comfort you and make you feel that everything is going to be fine. Just want to thank Jouanna for all her help. Also she helped me with my breastfeeding way. 100% for Jouanna. Super blessed to have her.

Zahra & Jouanna are amazing. I can't thank them both enough for all of their support through my pregancy and postpartum care. It was challenging through covid times and they both made it so easy! They made me feel very comfortable and at ease when my baby decided to suprise us and come early at 35 weeks. Zahra was on call and made me feel so calm and relaxed during birth. Jouanna was so attentive and called and visisted us many times when we had an exented stay in the hospital. Being my first pregancy, I learnt a lot in each appoitment. They both listened to my questions and were very knowledgeable. I couldn't have done it without you, Zahra & Jouanna, Thank you so much!

They took the time to answer my questions and I always felt “heard”. Jouanna was the on-call midwife for my birth and she was so calm and encouraging throughout my labour and delivery and she helped to make it a very positive experience. I would highly recommend Burnaby Midwifery Care!

I originally wrote and posted this review for New Horizon Midwifery when they were partnered with Burnaby Midwifery Care, but now that they are separate I thought I'd post it here as well: Zahra, Manijeh and Joanna are all fabulous midwives. They are patient, kind, personable, experienced and knowledgeable. Just the kind of support you want on your pregnancy and birth journey. Zahra was the midwife that attended my birth. She and her experienced practicum student (and mother) Vanessa were with me the whole way and were both amazing. They were exceptionally patient, and I never felt rushed to make a decision. I felt the most sense of control over my body possible given the circumstances. Zahra took several photos of my baby's delivery - a priceless keepsake I would not have if she were not there. If you torn between seeing an OB and a midwife, definitely see a midwife!
